SECRETS TO SUCCESS FROM SOME OF OUR TOP PRODUCERS
Actively promoting the program in the surrounding community proves that working together is the way to building a greener future. Working together to maximize the benefits that recycling provides helps keep our communities clean, improves our quality of life, and raises dollars to fund projects. |
How to set-up a successful program
Teamwork and communication are key to a successful program. Teams dedicated to recycling are an effective way to "get the ball rolling", to help launch a recycling program and to promote recycling activities in the school. As the recycling coordinator, you cannot accomplish this alone! You need support from many different people in your school building.
Develop a team that is made up of an administrator, custodian, other teachers, parents and students to support your recycling efforts. This diverse group will allow you identify various key issues in the school and assist in problem solving in order to ensure your program's success.
Once you've identified key players, it's time to develop an action plan. In order to make all building users aware of the school's commitment to waste reduction and environmental issues create a mission statement for your efforts and post it in a prominent place.
It's very important to set realistic goals and re-assess your progress often!!
- Place the bins in a very visible area outside where everyone will see them. Also make sure there is a bin in every classroom and in the office.
- Advertise through your school newsletter, on the marquee, and on the morning announcements.
- Place a shopping cart in the parent drop-off zone so that it is easier for parents to drop off paper.
- Have a catalog tower building contest between the grades.
- Place bins along the hallway for parents to use after a choral, band, or theatre performance or after Parent/Teacher night.
- Have students build a chart showing the number of bags of paper they place in the bin over Winter or Spring Break.
- Be sure to place a "Bring Your Paper to School" note on all your emails/letters home.
- Challenge the entire school to a certain tonnage amount for that month. If they reach the goal, have spirit day or pajama day.
- The most important way you can make your program more successful is by encouraging community members to bring their paper and by communicating how their efforts are helping you to raise money for important projects.
